10 volume
This developer is least damaging to hair and is often used with toners or permanent, no-lift hair color. It opens the hair cuticle so color molecules can deposit in the cortex for long-term results.

20 volume
This developer is less aggressive than 40 volume and is often recommended for at-home use. It's a standard developer for gray coverage, but you can also use 30 or 40 volume if you need more lift.

30 volume
This developer is often recommended for at-home use and can be used with permanent hair color.

40 volume
This developer is more aggressive than 20 volume and is only used for lightening hair, up to eight levels. It's ideal for achieving a super platinum blonde look, but it can also burn hair, so you should never use it at home.
